The famous murder of  six year old JonBenet Ramsey has been in question for over twenty years, mainly because the culprit was never identified or brought to justice. The lives of what seemed to be a normal family changed forever on December 26, 1996. Living in Boulder, Colorado the Ramsey family consists of John, Patsy, Burke (9 years old at the time of the murder) , and the youngest child JonBenet. JonBenet was known in her town for being a young beauty queen.

That all ended on Christmas Day 1996 when Patsy Ramsey called the police saying that there was ransom note demanding $118,000 if they wanted JonBenet back alive. Later that day, police discovered the six year old girls body in the basement of the Ramseys ’ house. JonBenet died of strangulation and a skull fracture. This case has sparked a lot of interest in the country. In the last two years there have been multiple documentaries and books about the murder. JonBents’s brother, Burke even went on Dr.Phil after twenty years of silence.

It’s so popular because there’s so much evidence that doesn’t really add up. For example, a the ransom note that was left was written on paper found inside of the house. This is considered pretty strange , if you’re going to kidnap a child and decide to take your time writing a three page letter in the process with a risk of getting caught. There never even a was kidnapping, her body ended up in the basement.  Another suspicion is the amount the note asked for, $118,000 which coveniently was the same amount of money John Ramsey recently got from his pay raise at work. Handwriting experts have viewed the letter and have concluded that it is almost certain that Patsy wrote it. Another piece of evidence was a bowl of pineapple chunks, the last this JonBenet ate before she died, her brother Burke’s fingerprints were found on it. The public targeted the family, believing that the parents were covering up the murder because Burke, who tended to act out violently, killed his sister. John and Patsy ended up changing their stories multiple times, which didn’t exactly paint them in the best light. But there were also other possible killers, such as the 38 sex offenders living near the Ramseys’.

Although there were multiple points supporting the theory of Burke killing his sister, the insufficient police work couldn’t confirm it. The police failed to conduct a proper investigation. They let people walk in and out of the house all day, which lead to contamination, John Ramsay was able to move the body before any DNA samples could be taken, and the parents were never interviewed together by the police. There are many possible situations in who killed JonBenet. If it was the family or not JonBenet’s murderer is still out there alive and was never  charged. Due to the fact of ineffective police procedure, there is not enough evidence, which is why the murder of JonBenet Ramsey will remain unsolved.
