With the human population growing, the earths resources are predicted to expire in the near future. Mr.sespico at room A108, has recently started a project that he hopes to  help with this natural resource issue and hopefully to carry on throughout the years, and go down in highlands history. The start of the compost project was started on one of the first days of school and has been more a hassle than a reward so far, but what would you go through to save your planet? The original spot for the compost piles were located just outside of F wing, past the two massive oak trees.

Of course it’s never that simple, upon further investigation into the site of composting we discovered that the original site for the tennis courts were located in that exact location. As Mr. Sespico says “you need worms!” And with the depth provided it is impossible to get those results in such a small area. With the old location of the tennis courts, there is maybe a foot of topsoil before you reach the old concrete from the original Har -brack, highlands days. With this new found information we decided to move the piles to a more “discrete” location, across the staff parking lot outside of F wing.

Of course with a quest it’s never that simple, due to national heights outstanding history, the entire hill that the school is located on has material called “slag” underneath the dirt. This type of rock is formed from steel mill waste that has impregnated the entire grounds of highlands high school. Fortunately with this material is does not have that large of a surface area, so with that in mind we should be able to successfully start the compost pile out of the way, and in an affective spot.

Later in the year Mr. Sespico plans to build a greenhouse and have a local garden for the community. And hopefully doing our part to help the earth get started in the slow process of turning our carbon footprint into a more green thumb.
