Cell Phones In The Classroom: The Debate Rages On

     The use of cell phones and other mobile devices in the classroom has been a long standing debate in most schools, including ours. The current cell phone policy at Highlands gives the power to each individual teacher to control use in their own room. Responses range from teaches requiring mobile devices been to banning the use of phones completely from bell to bell. This system highlights the pros and cons of cell phone use in class.

      Teachers who prefer that students not use their phones while class is taking place are set in their reasons. They find the devices to be distractions from the teacher and a symbol of disrespect. However, this is determined by how we define “cell phone use.” In this situation, there is no reason for students to use their phones to benefit their class time experience. Therefore they must be doing other things unrelated to class, which can become an issue. There is also a situation where the teacher requests that their students use mobile devices for research or to take a test or quiz. This also worries teachers who are against cell phone use, because they fear students will get off task or even look up answers for dishonest purposes. The other side of this opinion resides in teachers who encourage cell phone use. These are teachers who typically use Schoology and other related apps to keep in touch with students about assignments. Their view is that the responsibility is on students to remain on task and use the devices appropriately.

    At the heart of the discussion, then, is the amount of integrity educators expect to realistically receive from their students. As one of these students, I think cell phones and tablets have become a crucial piece of school equipment recently. The way we communicate in the world is changing majorly, and our school systems should reflect that. Refusing to utilize technology during class is a personal choice for each educator. These devices can be extremely beneficial to classes, but only when used responsibly. Therefore, choosing to not use cell phones as a part of their curriculum is a reasonable choice for teachers who do not trust their students to be accountable.
