On November 24th, I was lucky enough to interview an educator vital to the English department’s success, Mrs.Colleen Katz. Mrs.Katz is a great teacher because of the enthusiasm and knowledge she brings to the classroom on a daily basis. I asked her a few questions and she was able to respond however she saw fit. Here are the questions I asked Mrs.Katz:

How do you feel about the new motto “Why not us? Why not now?”

I think the new motto makes us think – focusing more on what is good about Highlands than negative.

How do you feel about the overall culture during the first year of the “reform”?

I don’t know that is a reform as much as just a different direction.  I have always thought Highlands has great students and teachers- but like most other schools. we have our weaknesses too.  I think the culture now is trying to work on the negative and accentuate the positives.

What motivated you to become a teacher at THE Highlands High School?

Highlands is very similar to the district I student taught in,- Shaler, so when I interviewed, the superintendent thought it would be a good fit.

What college did you go to, to pursue your dreams of becoming a teacher?

I got my bachelor’s degree in English and Communications from the University of Pittsburgh and my master’s degree in Education from Duquesne University

What did you like most about college?

With going to a big school like Pitt there were lots of opportunities to get involved in different activities and always something going on.

I am told that you are the prom planner, how did that come to be? And what is your favorite thing about planning such a big event?

Bahaha – prom planner!!! I am the Junior class and prom sponsor!  The best part of prom is watch the class officers reach their goals at the end – they are so invested and take so much pride, it is fun to see them through that process.

Also, I know that you’re a very family oriented person, how many people are in your family and what are their names?

I am not sure if I am family oriented or my family runs my life! Grace is a junior, Claire a freshman and Trevor is in 6th grade.
