The Highlands Choirs and Variations Show Choir finished out the year with their final choral concert titled “Musical Highlights” which was a tribute to 30 years of Highlands High School Musicals. The concert took place last Thursday, May 18th in the high school auditorium which drew in a full crowd. All ensembles are directed by Mr. Michael Zeiler and this is a recap of the concert and the events that took place.

The concert opened with all ensembles performing “There’s No Business Like Show Business” from Highlands 16th musical, “Annie Get Your Gun”. This led into Variations performing “New York New York” by Frank Sinatra to honor their New York trip at the beginning of May. Between each ensemble there was also numerous students who performed solo songs selected from these musicals.

Honors choir then took the stage and performed four songs. Honors Choir is an auditioned based group of students from 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. They have class 6th period everyday during school hours. They begun their set with “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Highlands 28th musical “Tarzan”. They continued on with “Over the Rainbow” from the 5th musical “The Wizard of Oz”, “Tonight” from the 17th Musical “West Side Story”, and concluded with “There Once Was a Man” from the 14th Musical “The Pajama Game”.

Shortly after, concert choir began their set. Concert choir is a group made of up grades 9th-12th where anyone can sign up and join. Class is held everyday during 5th period. They performed two songs, the first being “Anything Goes” from the 13th musical “Anything Goes” and the second being “Seventy Six Trombones” from the 18th musical “The Music Man”.

All choirs then came together for a series of medleys including songs from four different Highlands musicals. The medleys were from musicals “Grease” the 3rd musical, “Bye Bye Birdie” the 1st and 10th musical, “Shrek” the 27th musical, and “High School Musical” the 15th musical.

The final ensemble to perform was the Variations Show Choir. Variations is an audition based group with members ranging from freshmen to seniors. They performed a total of four songs throughout the show. Two of these songs were performed just after the combined choirs. They performed “Footloose” from the 15th musical “Footloose” and “It’s Your Wedding Day” from the 24th musical “The Wedding Singer”.

Finally, the show ended with “For Good” from the musical “Wicked” which students who partook in the New York trip got to see live on Broadway. This song was the senior song for this year which honored seniors from each ensemble before they graduate. Seniors gave flowers to their loved ones and there was a slideshow of the upcoming graduates. Once this ended there was a final encore performance of the song “Under the Sea” from this year’s 30th musical “The Little Mermaid”. Cast members performed the original vocals and choreography from the actual show that took place in March.

Overall, the concert was a huge success bringing people together to honor Highlands History. Many audience members sang along while some even reminisced on their days performing on the Highlands Stage. It was a great way to finish off a year of hard work and dedication between all ensembles.
