Looking Forward to the Final Quarter

Time flies! The third nine-weeks grading period is already coming to a close, and spring break marks a final respite before the last long haul. Students at Highlands High School are finally beginning to get antsy as the end of the 2015-2016 school year approaches. Still, as exciting as the prospect of summer is, there are a lot of exciting events to pack into the last quarter of the year.

Spring sports offer students frequent opportunities to compete or support. Boys’ Tennis has their first match Monday, March 21 against Riverview, and the Softball team plays their first official game next Thursday, March 24, against Kiski. A number of groups have already begun their seasons, including track, but there are still plenty of match-ups left to catch. Students looking to cheer on the Rams should check the school website for Baseball, Softball, Track and Boys’ Tennis schedules!

The school’s musical ensembles still has a number of events that spectators of all ages are encouraged to attend. The Honors Band class, composed of a core group of students looking to further their instrumental abilities with additional assignments, will hold its recital at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 6. The Spring Choral Concert will take place at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 18. The concert band will play its movie themed concert at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 4, featuring scores from movies such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Catch Me If You Can, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Incredibles. Musical lovers of all ages are encouraged to come out and support the school’s budding musicians!

Of course, it would be impossible to miss all of the Twitter and Instagram posts featuring Promposals! Highlands High School will hold its prom on Saturday, May 14 at the PPG Aquarium, fitting for the “Under the Sea” theme, and after-prom will take place back at the school itself. All Juniors and Seniors are welcome to attend, as well as any Sophomore who has been asked as a date by a Junior or Senior. Prices are still being deliberated, but tickets are set to go on sale in mid-April, so stay on the lookout for further information.

And, who could forget Spring Sanity? The event is in its third year here at Highlands High School, and already there has been buzz about the much anticipated event. Teams of all grade levels in the high school are encouraged to register and compete in the biggest charity dodgeball tournament in all of Natrona Heights! Those students who hold a grudge against a particular teacher or staff member can also pay for the opportunity to suit up in huge padded sumo costumes and sumo wrestle! Again, the event aims to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, so all proceeds from team fees and direct donations will be donated directly to the charity. And, of course, students who choose not to take part will still get to spectate and cheer; it is a much needed restoration of “sanity” for the whole summer-minded student body!

So although the prospect of summer is exciting, but there is a lot to be excited about in April in May too! Whatever their preference, there is plenty to keep any student busy with for the remainder of the school year.
